Sardinia: tourism and environmental impact reduction

The region of Sardinia has promoted a new initiative: sleeping in small groups of boats. This initiative makes it possible to increase the number of beds with reduced environmental impact.

Widespread nautical hotels will consist in “not less than seven recreational units for not less than fifty “cabin” beds and may only be granted for use to clients under rental contracts of a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of four weeks”.

Night navigation and navigation beyond three miles from the baselines of territorial waters of recreational units constituting a diffuse nautical hotel is not permitted. The councillor Gianni Chessa said that the initiative allows “us to continue working in a direction that is very close to our hearts and in which Sardinia has always been a model: eco-sustainability. The creation of new beds of this kind allows us to increase the island's accommodation capacity while safeguarding our wonderful coastline”.
