Organic farming in Italy: 25% target by 2027

During 2022, organic farming made a significant impact on the agricultural landscape, occupying 18.7% of the Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA) and involving 7.3% of total farms. Over a period of 32 years, a steady increase in both the number of operators and the area under cultivation has been observed, defying the historical trend of declining UAA. These relevant dynamics clearly emerge from the fourth Snpa Environment Report, recently presented in the city of Rome.

The research underlines the aspiration of the National Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in the period 2023-2027, which aims to allocate 25% of agricultural land to organic farming by 2027. This target reveals greater ambition than the parallel initiative outlined in the Farm to Fork strategy, which envisages achieving a similar percentage by 2030. This increasing focus on organic farming represents a significant shift in agricultural and environmental policies, outlining a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
