Italy is still the leader in agri-food market
The Made in Italy agri-food chain has exceeded 600 billion euro: these are the results presented at the International Forum on Agriculture and Food held in Rome by Coldiretti. The Italian agri-food industry has recorded significant growth despite the difficulties linked to the war and the pandemic. Made in Italy employs almost 4 million workers in 740 thousand farms, 70 thousand food industries, 330 thousand catering establishments and 230 thousand retail outlets.
Recently, however, there has been a change in Italian food habits, with one in three Italians tackling their daily grocery shopping by adopting strategies ranging from eating at the office to cutting waste and preferring Italian products, especially due to inflation linked to the war in Ukraine. Italians have adopted countermeasures to preserve the quality and quantity of the food they put on the table through strategies such as saving the cart, resorting to discounts and promotions, but also reducing waste and carefully planning the shopping list by managing impulse purchases and the family budget.
At the Forum, Coldiretti put on the table all the records of the Italian agri-food industry, such as the European leadership in organic farming with 80,000 operators, the EU record in the production of rice, vegetables and fruit, as well as the increase in agri-food exports in the first eight months of 2023, which grew by 8%: the countries in which they increased the most were France (+14%), Germany (+11%) and Great Britain (+11%), while for the first time they decreased in the United States (-3%).
