Italian cuisine nominated to UNESCO

The Italian government has officially nominated Italian cuisine to become a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. The proposal was made by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida.

"We have two years ahead of us in which we will have to promote our food in Italy and around the world, which we hope will see collective participation," Mazzi said.

The evaluation process is expected to be completed by December 2025. In the official nomination dossier for UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, Italian cuisine is defined as a set of social practices, rituals and gestures based on the many local knowledges that, without hierarchies, identify and represent it.

This mosaic of traditions reflects the country's biocultural diversity and is based on the conception of the moment of preparing and eating a meal as an occasion for sharing and confrontation. The dossier was prepared by Luiss Professor Pier Luigi Petrillo, who previously oversaw the UNESCO nominations of the Mediterranean Diet and Neapolitan pizza makers.
