DOP economy breaks through the 20 billion euro barrier

The Made in Italy DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) and IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) sectors continue to experience steady growth. A total of 326 products generated a turnover of 20.2 billion euros in 2022.   

The 21st Ismea-Qualivita report, set to be officially presented in Rome next Monday, has certified a 6.4% increase in the value of protected designation products this year. Out of the over 20 billion euros, 8.85 billion come from DOP and IGP agri-food products, while 11.3 billion come from the wine sector. As reported by "Il Sole 24 Ore", the DOP economy now represents 195,000 businesses and 296 protection consortia, providing employment for 580,000 people and contributing 20% to the turnover of the entire national agri-food sector. Also, its export has grown by 8.3%, totaling 11.6 billion euros earned in international markets, thanks to the recovery of non-EU markets, which marked a +10% growth in 2022.  

At the top of the list of DOP products generating the most value is Grana Padano, with a turnover of over 1.73 billion euros. In the third position among agri-food DOP products is Prosciutto di Parma, with 932 million euros, showing an 11% growth. Following in the Ismea-Qualivita ranking are mozzarella di bufala campana with 502 million euros and, in fifth place, balsamic vinegar of Modena IGP with 381 million euros, although it declined by 5.2% compared to the 2022 ranking.  

On the top ten list of Doc and Docg wines, Prosecco Doc remains at the forefront, with a production value of 1.145 billion euros and a rapid growth of 29%.
