Winter Mountain Tourism: A 24 Billion Industry Driving Growth and International Arrivals

The winter mountain tourism industry is a 24-billion-euro business. In the 2023/2024 season, the total turnover exceeded 23.7 billion euros, showing an 8% increase compared to the 22 billion euros of the previous season.

This includes direct, indirect, and induced impacts, with 11.2 billion euros from goods and services consumed by tourists.

Another 3.6 billion euros come from indirect benefits, while the supply chain impact is worth 5.8 billion euros.

For the 2024/2025 ski season, a total turnover of 11.7 billion euros is expected, with 5.8 billion euros spent on accommodation, 4.5 billion on equipment rentals, ski lessons, and ski passes, and 1.4 billion on retail, restaurants, and entertainment. While domestic tourism is expected to decrease by 4.2%, international arrivals are forecasted to rise by 7.5%, with significant increases from China, the US, Canada, Scandinavia, the UK, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Regarding prices, increases in hotels, ski passes, and ski schools are in line with inflation, with a 5.1% rise in hotel stays and a 3.6% increase for a ski holiday. High season and weekend periods see higher price hikes (+8.4%). Compared to three years ago, prices have risen by 34.1% for weekend and high season stays.

The most popular destinations are the Dolomites, with Cortina d’Ampezzo leading the rankings, followed by Madonna di Campiglio and Livigno. The most popular ski slopes are Longia in Val Gardena, Spinale Direttissima in Madonna di Campiglio, and Dantercepies. Additionally, ski mountaineering has seen a 68.7% increase in participants.
