Tourism Between Online, Sustainability, and Luxury: 2024 Trends
In 2024, the tourism sector is being shaped by three major trends: online sales, sustainability, and luxury.
Online platforms have solidified their role as the primary channel for tourism-related sales. This year, 56% of the transactions in the hospitality sector, amounting to €21 billion out of a total of €37.5 billion, are expected to be made through online channels.
Data from the Travel Innovation Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano shows positive growth trends across the sector: hospitality +4%, transport +10%, and travel agencies and tour operators +8%. The push towards sustainability is a key driver of this growth.
Carlo Sangalli, President of Confcommercio, emphasized: "Sustainability is crucial for the future. Businesses are adapting their standards, but they need government support during this transition." He also noted that "Over a third of tourists are willing to pay more for eco-friendly services."
On the luxury front, Benedetto Puglisi, Director of Real Estate & Hospitality at Deloitte, pointed out: "Luxury tourism in Italy is projected to grow faster than any other segment of the market."
