« Go back Saudi Arabia and Vision 2030: New Routes for Italian Exports
On Monday, February 9th, a webinar was held regarding current and future opportunities in Saudi Arabia, as part of the SEI Project - Support for Italian Exports. This initiative proves essential in providing Italian companies with the necessary tools to navigate high-potential markets such as the Arabian Peninsula.
Key Points of the Webinar:
1. Macroeconomic Scenario and Export Growth Saudi Arabia currently represents the second largest destination market for Italian exports in the region, preceded only by the UAE. The country is undergoing a phase of significant expansion, with a forecast GDP growth of over 4% in 2025 and positive projections for 2026.
- Leading Sectors: Opportunities for export and import involve machinery, steel products, pharmaceuticals, design, furniture, renewable energy, and the hospitality sector.
- Pharmaceutical Sector: There is strong interest in local production, patents, and general or pediatric medicines.
- Food & Agri: An increase in the import of Italian food products is recorded, especially in the Ho.Re.Ca. channel, driven by the massive opening of new bars and restaurants.
2. Social Transformations and New Market Targets The government plan Vision 2030 has triggered structural reforms that are changing the face of consumption:
- Young Demographics: 33% of the population is under 15, creating high demand for education and training.
- Role of Women: The increase of women in the workforce is fostering local entrepreneurship, particularly in the Interior Design, Fashion, and Retail sectors.
- Culture and Entertainment: The opening of cinemas and the organization of major musical events have accelerated the catering and leisure sectors.
3. Operating Strategies for Italian Companies To successfully approach the Saudi market, Italian companies must adopt specific communication methods:
- Direct Communication: Emails are often ignored; contact via WhatsApp or telephone is preferred.
- B2B Approach: Local companies are welcoming and interested in Italian products but require availability and patience.
- Investments: It is advisable to target small companies with high future potential, while remaining aware of their currently limited immediate capital investment capacity.
4. Major Events and Strategic Projects (B2B and B2C Opportunities) Saudi Arabia is preparing to host world-class events, representing exceptional showcases for Italian companies:
- Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
- Mega Projects: Massive investments in AI, data centers, efficient transport, and affordable housing.
- Logistics: Considered the true bridgehead for entering the Arabian Peninsula thanks to its strategic position between Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Webinar Protagonists: Design and Logistics
The core of the session featured contributions from two authoritative international speakers who provided a practical and immediate perspective on local dynamics:
- Yousef Al Hammouri (Distretto Design): In his speech, Al Hammouri highlighted how Italian Design is a fundamental asset. However, "aesthetics" alone are no longer enough: the Saudi market now demands partners capable of integrating products into large hospitality and residential projects. With the explosion of the retail sector and the opening of cultural centers, Italian "know-how" in furniture and interior design must adapt to accelerated selection processes and a new young and cosmopolitan demographic.
- Mohammed Zuabi (El Zafar Wings Cargo): Zuabi focused his intervention on Logistics, defining it as the true "bridgehead" for the entire region. Thanks to massive investments in infrastructure and efficient transport, Saudi Arabia aims to become a global logistical hub. For Italian companies exporting machinery, steel, or perishable goods (Food), understanding new Saudi routes and logistical nodes means cutting costs and increasing competitiveness throughout the Arabian Peninsula.
